What You Need to Know Tips For Driving in Kenya
Exploring Kenya on a self drive can be challenging especially for first timers even usual travelers but for a hassle free experience, you rather have to have a positive mindset than driving in Europe or North America.
Below are our top tips and advice for a smoother 4×4 Kenya Self Drive road trip:
- Driving time: Its important you plan your journey accordingly and avoid driving after dark. Kenyan roads lack are quite tricky at night and wildlife (as well as unlit vehicles) can appear unexpectedly. Always aim to be at your campsite or lodge by 6:00 PM.
- Download Offline Maps: While network coverage is improving, large swaths of Tsavo and Samburu are still lacking. Download the Kenya region on Google Maps or Maps.me before you leave Nairobi so that you navigate easily.
- Tire Pressure Matters: On paved highways, keep your tires firm. However, once you go off-road into the parks, slightly lowering your tire pressure can provide better traction and a much smoother ride.
- Animals in National Parks: Please note that, wildlife always have the 100% right of way. If an elephant herd is crossing, turn off your engine, stay quiet, and give them at least 100 meters of space
- Check Your Documents: Always carry your original driver’s license (and an International Driving Permit if your license isn’t in English), your Car rental Kenya agreement, and the vehicle’s insurance stickers (usually displayed on the windshield).
What Clients Say
PhiVerified 10* STARS FOR BEYOND THE PLAINS AND THEIR AMAZING DRIVER KEN! I’m still processing the incredible 11 day trip that I have just had with Beyond The Plains in Kenya 🇰🇪 From start to finish they have been so helpful, from when I first reached out for a no obligation quote, all the way through our trip and after. This journey was an out of this world experience. This is hugely thanks to the magnificent driver we were assigned, the wonderful Kennedy! He is first of all an incredibly kind person, extremely safe driver and he’s also very knowledgeable, not just on the animals but everything about Kenya, the history, the people, the culture - and he’s really funny too! But most importantly for me he was very respectful of the animals, not disturbing them, getting too close or surrounding them. Just a few of the top highlights from this trip (though every single day was a highlight for us) was visiting Ol Pejeta Conservancy and seeing 19 wild Rhinos in one day as well as meeting the 2 last Northern White Rhinos on the planet - they are mother and daughter who are under 24hr care and protection. They are now classed as extinct because there are no males left. As well as meeting the lovely Baraka - a blind black rhino who lost one eye to another rhino and the other to cataracts. We then also got to visit the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary within the Conservancy which Jane Goodall helped establish back in 1993. It was created to provide a lifelong refuge for orphaned and rescued chimpanzees from West and Central Africa, and has now rescued over 29 individuals. Beyond The Plains went above and *beyond* for us!!! They really did. I had a lot of plans and ideas for this trip and they made sure everything I wanted to do was possible as well as changing some things for me last minute which was just amazing of them. We visited four different regions whilst we were there, staying in different luxury accommodations along the way, these were Amboseli Praro Camp which sits within the Aloca Conservancy, and had a magnificent view of Mt Kilimanjaro, it’s such a beautiful camp with amazing staff and food. Ol Pejeta Maisha Sweetwaters Camp, which was just mind blowingly beautiful again amazing staff, views and delicious food! The Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge in Lake Nakuru National Park - the location was a very exciting landscape change, with more of a jungle feel to it - and it’s a birders paradise. I photographed so many birds there. And last of all we stayed at the house incredible Mara Zebra Valley Camp, which on arrival was the wonderful surprise that we had so kindly been upgraded at the request from our lovely driver Ken. The Valley Camp quite literally has the most incredible view of the Masai Mara Valley, watching elephants, warthogs, zebras, hyenas and giraffes all whilst having our breakfasts and lunches. All of our accommodations had absolutely incredible, kind and helpful staff. But at the wonderful request of Beyond The Plains, the Zebra Valley Camp staff sang for me on my birthday and brought out a cake for me which the chefs had so kindly baked and decorated! The most amazing and unforgettable birthday! 🎂🥳 Each accommodation, all transport, national park tickets and everything else we did was arranged and sorted by Beyond The Plains. Before I found them, which was through the lovely Ella Mckendrick on YouTube, attempting to plan and book this safari without a company was the most overwhelming and stressful thing I have tried to do in terms of booking a trip. There’s so much to think about and so much to sort out if you don’t do it through a company. I HIGHLY recommend Beyond The Plains for anyone who is wanting to do a Safari in Kenya or Tanzania. I feel no words or thanks could ever be enough for this outstanding company! We are already talking about planning the next trip with them back to Kenya, we loved it SO much!!! 🙏🏼😄 Go772202Verified Amazing experience is all I can say So, we attended a wedding in Kenya and decided to do a Safari. I researched it through a YouTuber, Ella Mckendrick, and came across this company. All I can say is OUTSTANDING!!! I worked with Andrew to get it set up and he patiently addressed all of my questions and worked with me to meet our needs. Our guide, Ian, was phenomenal!! Words cannot describe what a fantastic job he did for us. I would highly recommend this company to anyone going over there. Well worth it. We will need to go back because we are still missing one of the Big Five lol. Mal GVerified Great Safari - Brilliant Guides Both our Driver and our guide Lee Roy and Edward were absolutely fantastic. Edward has a huge knowledge of animals and the local environment and answered every question we had. Lee Roy was happy to stop or move on at every request and he can get a vehicle anywhere to get the best view/photographs. They were always happy, polite and affable. It was like being on Safari with friends. If you are booking a Safari with Beyond The Plains, I thoroughly recommend that you ask for these guys to be your guides. Bhavyata JVerified The team is always available with quick responses | highly professional | experienced guide | private game drives Our experience with Beyond the Plains was extremely smooth and comfortable. They handled our enquiry very quickly and the booking was done seamlessly. Their responses were always very quick. They, especially Lilian from the team who was handling our booking, were supportive and always available to clarify doubts and help us pack better and be better prepared for the trip. Our guide Antony was very highly experienced and helped us to successfully see the wildlife, and was always in a jolly mood. We went as a couple for our anniversary and thoroughly enjoyed all arrangements done by this team. Highly recommended! A MVerified HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND This company is AMAZING and I cannot recommend them enough. PLANNING: Because these safaris can be SOOOO flexible, planning can be really overwhelming. That's where this company comes in ! I did a lot of research, compared quotes and spoke to several companies before choosing this on. We chose them because of how quickly they understood our needs, and how quickly they communicated with us. SAMMY immediately understood what our preferences were, and what would work within our budget - he suggested amazing tips to make the most of our trip and help out $$$ Go far. On safari: The trip itself was AMAZING. As soon as we landed, we were treated like absolute royalty. Someone was always there to make sure we were in the right place at the right time. Basically everything was as perfect as could be. We were safe throughout and all the chosen accomodations were amazing. I especially am grateful how the team was will go refund an amount when we were not on the same page about an extra day at a park. That was very much appreciated. We recommended 'beyond the plains' to another friend, and Sammy helped her plan her trip in 3 weeks ! Surajeet RVerified In a single line, it was a Great trip felt so homely there because of the smooth arrangement by Beyond the plains safari It was a great experience doing gane safari with Beyond the plains. Everything was smoothly organised. Specially Mr. Roonie the guide was so accommodating that we never feel like we were away from home. Stay arrangements and foods were awesome. Driving and sighting also great. Ellie BVerified Seamless from start to finish! Coming from the UK, we had very little knowledge about Kenya before this trip. This is why we decided to use Beyond The Plains to help us plan, book and guide us through our 7 day safari visit. This was a trip of a lifetime for us and so it was really important we could trust the company we were going with. Our dedicated point of contact was extremely responsive and made me feel at complete ease leading up to the start date. From the first conversation and agenda planning right until the end of the trip, everything with BTP was so easy and seamless and the team ensured that everything was perfect. It was our birthdays during the trip and the team had even let the hotels know, who then planned cakes and little surprises for us - that made it extra special! Our tour guide Moses - wow! He was phenomenal and we had the best week. He was extremely knowledgeable about Kenya and the parks we visited, and always knew where to take us to get the best photos and to see the big 5! He was a great laugh as well as great at making us feel super safe at all times. Overall this company provided us an experience with exceeded our expectations - we will be back!!! Turismo TVerified Unforgettable experience with a trustworthy company We arrived at the lodge late on the first day and were escorted to our restaurant table. We weren't dining long when an elephant walked by right in front of us. The next morning on safari the first animal we saw was Mufasa up close, straight out of Lion King. This safari was unforgettable and the company Beyond The Plains professional and reliable in every sense. I have no problem recommending them. Some tips: keep the itinerary to 2 or three locations to avoid lots of drive time, have a free day in one of the lodges and avoid the highway gift stores. The lodge gift stores were half the price. J PVerified Excellent tour operator Just came back from 11 days (04 to 15 Feb 26) Kenya Safari with Beyond the Plains. What an unforgettable experience. From the initial enquiry till we were dropped off at the airport on return, they provided excellent service, cannot fault anything. Honest, trustworthy, flexible and reliable operator. For enquiries and bookings, Andrew was instrumental in helping with the whole thing and was available almost 24/7. He would try and accommodate all your needs and requests; nothing was too much to ask. Very good accommodation and services. To top it all off we had John as our guide. Safe and sound, John was exceptional, especially on the game drives, where he would get us in the best position to see animals. Would highly recommend Beyond the Plains (and John) Josep M GVerified My first safari has been with Beyond the Plains . Excellent and recommended decision. We were two couples of friends , all already retired . For me was the first experience in safaris . From the first moment I felt we were in very professional hands , from the enterprise and specially with our driver Ronnie . I noticed that he was a reliable driver in the chaotic and dangerous way that people drives in Kenia main roads. We had a good comunitation with him , and answered our doubts and questions. The parks we visited were very interesting , Ronnie demonstrated us that he knows very well the best places and moments for watching the animals . Amboseli, Naivasha, Nakuru and specially Masai Mara will remain in my memory for the rest of my life. I could enjoy it very much taking photos , my main hobby and main reason for that travel . Me and my wife and friends were very satisfied with the acommodation places , specially in Praro Amboseli and Mara Simba. We were also satisfied with the vehicle used , a Toyota all terrain that looked as a new one . We did more than 1000 km in all these days and our backs ended with no pain nor any problems. I will recommend your services to anyone interested in safaris .
